Introduction

This is a first-year, post-secondary course on probability and statistics. The course is offered as STAT 1201: Introduction to Probability and Statistics at Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning. It is based on the open educational resource, OpenIntro Statistics by David Diez, Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel, and Christopher D. Barr (2019) CC BY-SA 3.0.

Let’s start by watching the video The NBA Data Scientist (Bloomberg Originals, 2019) for a compelling example of why you should study statistics (duration 00:08:05):

The course is organized into six units each of which is organized into three or four lessons. Each lesson includes:

  • Learning objectives
  • A checklist of learning activities
  • Suggested readings in OpenIntro Statistics (Diez et al., 2019) CC BY-SA 3.0
  • Embedded instructional videos to reinforce your learning
  • A virtual statistical software lab based on jamovi (The jamovi Project, 2022), which is free and open statistical software built on top of the R statistical language
  • Practice exercises from OpenIntro Statistics (Diez et al., 2019) CC BY-SA 3.0 and WeBWorK.
  • Suggested websites to complement the readings
  • Supplementary notes

The course STAT 1201: Introduction to Probability and Statistics also includes graded assessments: lesson check-in questions, virtual statistical software lab questions, unit assignments, a midterm exam, and a final exam. These assessments are only accessible to students registered in the STAT 1201 course.
